In order to be eligible for federal student aid both the student and all contributors must provide consent and approval on the FAFSA form. When consent and approval is provided the contributor(s) is agreeing to:
-
Have federal tax information transferred directly into the FAFSA form via direct data exchange with the IRS;
-
Have federal tax information used to determine the student's eligibility for federal student aid; and
-
Allow the U.S. Department of Education to share its federal tax information with postsecondary institutions and state higher education agencies for use in awarding and administering financial aid.
How will I be notified to provide consent?
Applicants will invite other contributors to complete their portion of the FAFSA by entering the contributor’s name, date of birth, SSN and email address. An email will be sent from Federal Student Aid to each contributor email address providing them with instructions to complete their portion of the FAFSA form and to give consent and approval.
Do I still need to provide consent if I did not file taxes?
Yes, non-tax filers must still provide consent.
What happens if a FAFSA contributor does not provide consent?
All contributors must provide consent. Without consent and approval, and a signature from all contributors on your FAFSA form, you will not be eligible for federal student aid.
