Scholarships

Scholarships are a form of student aid that’s considered a gift that a student does not have to repay. They are often based on scholastic achievement or special talent and some scholarships consider a student’s financial need.

Tips When Writing a Scholarship Essay

  • Avoid spelling and grammar errors. Proofread carefully!
  • Be creative and authentic. Tell your unique story and clearly explain why you deserve the scholarship.
  • Don’t write a cookie-cutter essay for all: Ensure your essay matches the directions (essay length and topic).
  • Tailor your essay to the mission and values of the organization offering the scholarship.

Avoid Common Mistakes

  • Never pay to apply. Legitimate scholarships will never require a fee.
  • Don’t start late. Apply early and often to maximize opportunities.
  • Don’t limit your search. There are many different types of scholarship opportunities available.

Important Note: Complete the FAFSA

Students seeking financial assistance should also submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to be considered for grants, loans, and work-study. Many scholarships, even those primarily merit-based, require a completed FAFSA to assess a student’s overall financial profile.
