Assistance Animal – An animal that provides emotional support or other assistance but is not a Service Animal. Such animals are covered under the Fair Housing Act (FHA) and require approval from the College.
Personal Pets/Animals – Any domesticated animal kept for companionship or enjoyment that is not classified as a Service Animal or an approved Assistance Animal.
Service Animal – A dog (or, in some cases, a miniature horse) that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for a person with a disability, as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
3.0 Scope
This policy applies to all Baker College students, faculty, staff, visitors, and contractors. It governs the presence of personal pets and animals on all Baker College properties, including but not limited to classrooms, offices, residence halls, and common areas.
4.0 Policy Statement
While personal pets/animals are generally not permitted on Baker College property, Service Animals and approved Assistance Animals are not considered pets.
For the safety and comfort of everyone on campus, the following guidelines must be followed:
- Control of Animals: Any animal brought onto Baker College property must be under the immediate control of its owner or handler. In common areas, dogs and cats should be on a leash no longer than six (6) feet or confined to an appropriate carrying device. All other animals should be confined to a cage or suitable carrying device.
- Veterinary Program Animals: Animals used in support of Veterinary Program activities must remain confined to the kennel area of the Vet Tech lab when not being used for educational or treatment purposes.
- Owner Responsibility: Owners or handlers are responsible for their animals' behavior and must clean up after them.
We appreciate your cooperation in ensuring our campus remains a safe and welcoming environment for all.
