1.0 Purpose
The purpose of this policy is to outline the guidelines and procedures for Baker College's Study Abroad and Intern Abroad programs. This policy aims to provide students with transformative educational experiences that foster independence, intercultural understanding, and enhanced career skills while ensuring that these opportunities align with the academic goals of Baker College.
2.0 Definitions
Intern Abroad - A program that provides practical work experience in a foreign country as part of a student's educational journey.
Study Abroad - A program allowing students to earn academic credits while studying in a foreign country.
Study Abroad/Intern Abroad Agency - An organization that partners with Baker College to provide study abroad and intern abroad opportunities.
3.0 Scope
This policy applies to all undergraduate students at Baker College who wish to participate in study abroad or intern abroad programs. It covers eligibility criteria, application processes, and responsibilities of students, faculty, and staff involved in these programs.
4.0 Policy Statement
Baker College encourages students to engage in study abroad and intern abroad opportunities to enhance their educational experience. The following guidelines govern these programs:

Eligibility: Open to undergraduate students who have completed one year of college. Specific programs may have additional requirements regarding academic standing and GPA.

Application Process: Students must begin their research and application process early, especially if seeking financial aid. The application process includes selecting a program (including courses if applying for a Study Abroad program), filling out an application at Baker College, and applying through the Study Abroad/Intern Abroad agency that partners with Baker College.

Financial Aid and Scholarship:

Eligible students may utilize financial aid for study abroad costs. Students should consult with their Baker College Academic Advisor and Financial Aid Advisor regarding funding options.

Eligible students may apply for the Baker Alumni Sponsored Study Abroad Scholarship, which is available to support their study abroad and intern abroad opportunities.

Eligible students may apply for scholarships and grants offered by the Study Abroad/Intern Abroad agency that partners with Baker College, as well as those offered by external organizations.
5.0 Procedures
Application Procedure
Students review available programs offered by the Study Abroad/Intern Abroad agency that partners with Baker College and select an appropriate program.
Students consult with the Director of Education Abroad & Global Programs, their program director, and their academic advisor to ensure the selected program (including courses) is appropriate for their Baker College program.
Students fill out a Baker College Study/Intern Abroad Application to gain approval from the Baker College Registrar’s Office.
Students apply through the Study Abroad/Intern Abroad agency that partners with Baker College while following their guidelines.
Financial Aid and Scholarship Application
Students work with the Baker College Financial Aid Advisor to determine available funding before registering for a program.
Students work with the Study Abroad/Intern Abroad agency that partners with Baker College for additional funding opportunities.
Students may seek other external funding opportunities if appropriate.
Credit application
Students are responsible for initiating the process to apply the credits obtained abroad to their Baker College programs.
The Director of Education Abroad & Global Programs and the Study Abroad/Intern Abroad agency that partners with Baker College will provide assistance.
6.0 Responsibilities
Baker Alumni Sponsored Study Abroad Scholarship Committee
Reviews student applications for the Baker Alumni Sponsored Study Abroad Scholarship and makes corresponding decisions.
Director of Education Abroad & Global Programs
Oversees the Study Abroad and Intern Abroad Program and provide guidance to students throughout the application process and study/intern abroad process.
Program Directors and Academic Advisors
Assist students in selecting appropriate study abroad opportunities that align with their academic goals.
Financial Aid Advisors
Provide information on financial aid options and assist students in understanding the funding processes.
