1.0 Purpose
The purpose of this policy is to detail the college criteria for academic standing for undergraduate and graduate students and to provide guidance for appropriate response by a student to an assigned academic standing.
2.0 Definitions
Cumulative Grade Point Average (Cumulative GPA) - The average of a student's grades across all completed coursework.
Grade Point Average (GPA) - A numerical representation of a student's academic performance, calculated on a scale typically ranging from 0.0 to 4.0.
3.0 Scope
This policy applies to all undergraduate and graduate students of Baker College.
4.0 Policy Statement
Baker College is committed to maintaining academic integrity and supporting students in their educational pursuits. The college has established a system of academic standing that includes classifications of Good Standing, Academic Warning, Academic Probation, Academic Suspension, and Academic Dismissal. These classifications are based on a student’s cumulative GPA and overall academic performance.
Students will be provided feedback and advice to help them achieve good academic standing. The college will work collaboratively with students to develop success plans for improvement and re-enrollment when necessary.
Undergraduate Academic Standing
Good Standing
College criteria: A cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher
Academic Warning
College criteria: One semester with a cumulative GPA below 2.0
Feedback/Advice: Seek out additional academic support from tutoring, academic advising, and your faculty.
Academic Probation
College criteria: Two or more consecutive semesters with a cumulative GPA below 2.0, OR, improved cumulative GPA towards good standing while on probation
Feedback/Advice:
- Seek out additional academic support from tutoring, academic advising, and your faculty
- Work with your academic advisor to connect with and develop success strategies in areas such as time management
Academic Suspension*
College criteria:
- A semester GPA below 2.0 while on Academic Probation, OR
- A declining semester GPA while on Academic Probation, OR
- One semester of a 0.0 GPA while on Academic Warning
Feedback/Advice: Consideration for re-enrollment will be given only once the following have been met:
- A Success Plan has been developed collaboratively with Academic Advising, AND
- An absence* from the college of at least one semester
Academic Dismissal*
College criteria:
- Failure to earn a cumulative 2.0 GPA, AND
- Previous suspension during any prior semester
Feedback/Advice: Consideration for re-enrollment will be given only once the following have been met:
- An absence of at least one calendar year, AND
- Re-application and acceptance to Baker College
* A student may appeal Academic Suspension and Academic Dismissal in writing to the Dean of Students
Graduate Academic Standing
Good Standing
College criteria: A cumulative GPA to meet or exceed the minimum GPA listed on the step scale below:
- 1-9 attempted hours: 2.75
- 10-18 attempted hours: 2.87
- 19+ attempted hours: 3.0
Academic Probation
College criteria: A cumulative GPA that falls below the specified scale outlined above, OR, improved cumulative GPA in alignment with the step scale and progressing toward good standing while on probation.
Academic Suspension*
College criteria: A semester GPA below what is required on the step scale while on Academic Probation.
Feedback/Advice: Consideration for re-enrollment will be given only once the following have been met:
- A Success Plan has been developed collaboratively with Academic Advising, AND
- An absence* from the college of at least one semester
Academic Dismissal*
College criteria: Failure to earn a cumulative GPA based on the step scale and previous suspension during any prior semester.
Feedback/Advice: Consideration for re-enrollment will be given only once the following have been met:
- An absence of at least one calendar year, AND
- Re-application and acceptance to Baker College
*A student may appeal Academic Suspension and Academic Dismissal in writing to the Dean of Students
5.0 Procedures
Assignment of Academic Standing
A student's academic standing status is based on the student's GPA and will be assigned at the conclusion of each academic term. A standing of Academic Warning, Academic Probation, Academic Suspension, or Academic Dismissal will be noted on the student's transcript.
Student Response
Undergraduate
- Academic Warning: The student will seek out academic support from tutoring, academic advising, and faculty.
- Academic Probation: The student will seek out additional academic support from their academic advisor to connect with and develop success strategies in areas such as time management.
- Academic Suspension: The student will be considered for re-enrollment only once
- A Success Plan has been developed collaboratively with Academic Advising, AND
- An absence from the college of at least one semester
- Academic Dismissal: The student will be considered for re-enrollment only once:
- An absence of at least one calendar year, AND
- Re-application and acceptance to Baker College
Graduate
- Academic Suspension: The student will be considered for re-enrollment only once:
- A Success Plan has been developed collaboratively with Academic Advising, AND
- An absence from the college of at least one semester
- Academic Dismissal: The student will be considered for re-enrollment only once:
- An absence of at least one calendar year, AND
- Re-application and acceptance to Baker College
6.0 Responsibilities
Students
It is the responsibility of the student to maintain satisfactory academic performance and seek help when necessary. Students should actively engage with academic advisors, tutoring, and faculty to improve their academic standing if needed.
If placed on Academic Suspension, the student must meet with an academic advisor to develop a Success Plan and must not attend for at least one semester.
If placed on Academic Dismissal, the student must not attend for a least one calendar year and reapply and be accepted to Baker College.
Academic Advisors
Advisors are responsible for monitoring students' academic progress, providing guidance, and helping students develop Success Plans.
Advisors should also inform students about the consequences of falling into poor academic standing and available support resources.
Faculty
Faculty members are responsible for communicating course expectations and grading policies clearly. They should provide students with feedback on their academic performance and refer students to tutoring services when appropriate.
Office of the Registrar
The Office of the Registrar will assign academic standing at the end of each term based on students' cumulative GPA and academic performance.
Dean of Students
The Dean of Students will handle written appeals related to Academic Suspension and Academic Dismissal and will make final decisions on these matters.
