1.0 Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to establish guidelines for students regarding the recording of a course session.

2.0 Definitions

Audio Recording - Capturing sound from a course session by electronic means.

Video Recording - Capturing both visual and audio elements of a course session by electronic means.

Personal Use - Use limited to the enrolled student’s individual academic study, not for distribution or sharing.

3.0 Scope

This policy applies to all Baker College courses, including in-person, hybrid, and online formats.

4.0 Policy Statement

Students are permitted to audio record lectures or mini-lectures within course sessions for personal use. Video recording of course sessions for personal use is subject to instructor authorization.

5.0 Procedures

Audio Recording

  • Prior to recording, the student must notify the instructor that an audio recording will be made.
  • The notification may be verbal or written, as determined by the instructor’s preference.

Video Recording

  • The student must submit a request to the instructor before making any video recording of a course session.
  • Authorization must be granted by the instructor before recording begins.
  • Authorization may be provided verbally or in writing, at the instructor’s discretion.

Limitations

  • Recordings are for the personal use of the student and may not be distributed, posted, or shared without explicit permission.
  • All recordings must comply with applicable college policies and relevant laws.

6.0 Responsibilities

Students 

  • Notify the instructor before making an audio recording of the a course session.
  • Submit a request to the instructor before making any video recording of a course session.
  • Obtain authorization from the instructor before making any video recording of a course session.

  • Review student requests for recording in alignment with college policy and applicable laws.
  • Provide approval or denial of video recording requests in a timely manner.
