Responsible Oversight: VP of Enrollment Management
Date of Current Revision / Creation: December 3, 2024
|
1.0 Purpose
The purpose of this policy is to outline the requirements and procedures for an applicant who has previously attended Baker College to ensure a smooth return to Baker College.
2.0 Definitions
ReEntry Student -An applicant who has not graduated from their most recent program of study, is not currently registered for a future semester, and has been unenrolled from the College (i.e., not actively taking classes) for three or more consecutive semesters.
3.0 Scope
This policy covers the application and admissions process for ReEntry students. It encompasses the entire admissions process for these applicants.
4.0 Policy Statement
Undergraduate students returning to Baker College after an absence of three consecutive semesters or more are required to complete the electronic ReEntry application for admission. All returning students are required to meet the current admissions standards and curriculum requirements at the time of re-entry.
Students who have been away from their program for less than three consecutive semesters will work directly with their assigned Academic Advisor to facilitate re-enrollment into their program.
Graduate students who are seeking re-entry after a three-year absence are required to submit a new application and will undergo a full review process to determine eligibility for re-admission based on current program criteria and prior academic performance.
All previous coursework and grades earned during prior attendance remain on the student’s official transcript and are factored into the cumulative GPA.
A ReEntry student must meet the current admissions standards for the institution. Depending on their academic standing at the time of departure, students may be readmitted without additional review or may require further evaluation to ensure readiness for success. In some cases, students may be advised to apply for academic amnesty, if appropriate.
For additional information about ReEntry admissions, please refer to the Baker College Student Handbook.
5.0 Procedures
Application Process
Students in Good Standing or Academic Probation at the Time of Departure
Students who left the College in good academic standing or on academic probation and have not graduated from their program may apply for re-entry by submitting the ReEntry Application at baker.edu/apply.
Admission will be granted upon confirmation of satisfactory performance, which involves a Baker College transcript review conducted by the assigned Admissions Advisor or Enrollment Specialist.
- Returning students may be asked to resubmit high school or college transcripts if previous records are no longer available and/or up-to-date program specific applicant file documents.
- If the student has completed college-level coursework at another institution since attending Baker College, they should submit official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended.
- Once all transcripts have been received, including the Baker College transcript, an official transfer evaluation will be completed to determine applicable coursework for the student’s academic plan.
Students Returning from Academic Suspension
Students previously placed on academic suspension who meet the standards for re-enrollment must submit the ReEntry Application.
Admission will be considered once all required documentation has been received and reviewed.
- Returning students may be asked to resubmit high school or college transcripts if previous records are no longer available and/or up-to-date program specific applicant file documents.
- Students who have attended other institutions since their last date of enrollment at Baker College must submit official transcripts from those schools.
- An official transcript evaluation will be conducted to determine which completed courses may apply to the student’s updated academic plan.
Students Returning from Academic Dismissal (Undergraduate Only)
Undergraduate students who were academically dismissed and are eligible to reapply must submit the ReEntry Application.
Once submitted, a comprehensive review will be conducted by the assigned Admissions Advisor or Enrollment Specialist, using an established evaluation rubric. This review may include:
- Evidence of academic progress or preparation during the student’s time away (e.g., completion of coursework at another accredited institution, academic support activities, or personal/professional achievements),
- A demonstration of readiness to succeed in a structured academic environment.
Students Returning After Expulsion
Students who were previously expelled may apply for readmission after a minimum of four years from the date of expulsion.
The following items must be submitted as part of the reapplication process:
- A completed ReEntry Application (available at baker.edu/apply), and
- A Personal Statement that outlines:
- The circumstances surrounding the expulsion,
- How the student has grown since that time, and
- The steps taken to prepare for academic and personal success at Baker College.
The request will be reviewed by a committee composed of the Vice President of Enrollment, Vice President of Student Success and Engagement, and/or the Dean of Students.
If readmission is approved, the student must complete all remaining steps of the ReEntry admissions process to ensure their admissions file is complete before enrollment.
