1.0 Purpose

Baker College’s Running Start program provides high school students with opportunities to earn college credits through dual enrollment pathways. The program is designed for students who demonstrate the academic ability and motivation to succeed in a college-level environment. This policy outlines the admissions process for the Running Start program, emphasizing Baker College's commitment to providing equal access to higher education while maintaining academic integrity.

2.0 Definitions

Concurrent Enrollment (CE): College courses offered at the high school, taught by credentialed high school instructors.

Direct Credit (DC): College courses offered at the high school, taught by Baker College faculty.

Dual Enrollment (DE): College courses taken at Baker College, either on-campus or online, with regular Baker College undergraduate students.

Early Middle College (EMC): A specialized Running Start pathway in partnership with state-approved secondary schools or technical centers. The program spans three years (grades 11-13) and culminates in earning an Associate’s Degree, Certificate, MEMCA Certification, up to 60 transferable college credits.

Running Start (RS): A dual credit program for high school students offering multiple pathways for earning college credits.

3.0 Scope

This policy applies to all individuals applying for the Running Start program at Baker College. It governs the admissions process for Running Start applicants. This policy does not apply to undergraduate, graduate, guest, or international student admissions.

4.0 Policy Statement

Admissions Eligibility

Applicants should have completed at least one semester of high school and maintained a minimum GPA of 2.5. Students with a GPA of 2.0-2.4 may be admitted with a recommendation from a school counselor.
Optional Standardized Testing

Although ACT or SAT scores are not required for Running Start admission, students are encouraged to submit these scores, which may aid in course placement and assessment verification.
English Language Proficiency

Non-native English speakers are encouraged to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores to demonstrate English language proficiency.
Maintaining an Effective Educational Environment

Baker College reserves the right to deny admission to students whose behavior may disrupt the educational environment.
Accuracy of Application Information

Accurate information is required during the admissions process. Providing false or misleading information may result in denial of admission or dismissal from the program.

5.0 Procedures

Application Process:

  1. Applicants will complete an online Running Start application via the Baker College website and submit all required documents, including a high school transcript.
  2. Applicants will receive a Baker College UIN and login information via email once their application is processed.
  3. Upon admission, students will complete the Running Start New Student Welcome Experience before registering for courses.
     

Registration Process:

  • Dual Enrollment (DE): Eligible students will be guided by a Student Success Coach to select classes and complete the necessary forms for registration.
  • Concurrent Enrollment (CE) / Direct Credit (DC): The Running Start team coordinates with high school partners to finalize course lists and register students.
  • Early Middle College (EMC): EMC students will follow the registration steps outlined for dual enrollment, with additional meetings to plan for courses required for their associate's degree.
     

6.0 Responsibilities

Applicant 

Completes the application and submits the required documents.

High School Partner 

Verifies eligibility and provides necessary documentation.

Running Start Staff

Manages the processing and maintenance of application records.
