1.0 Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to promote a safe, healthy, and supportive environment for the Baker College community by providing education on the potential risks associated with alcohol and drug use. This policy also outlines available prevention programs and resources to help students, faculty, and staff make informed decisions regarding substance use.

2.0 Definitions

Minor -  A person under the age of 21

3.0 Scope

In compliance with the Drug-Free Schools and Campuses Regulations (34 CFR Part 86) of the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act (DFSCA), Baker College implements educational programs and policies to prevent substance misuse among students and employees, whether on campus property or during college-sponsored activities.

4.0 Policy Statement

Baker College is committed to maintaining a drug-free and alcohol-restricted campus environment. While recognizing that individuals over the age of 21 may legally consume alcohol, the College encourages responsible decision-making and adherence to all applicable federal, state, and local laws.

The unauthorized use of alcohol on Baker College property or at college-sponsored activities is not permitted unless expressly approved by the Campus Director or their designee.

Alcohol Guidelines for Residential Students

  • Residents 21 years or older may consume alcoholic beverages only within their residence hall unit with the door closed and no minors present, except for their assigned roommate(s).
  • Alcohol must be transported to and from the residence in a sealed, covered container.
  • Open alcohol containers should not exceed the number of legal-aged individuals in the room at any time.
  • Bulk quantities and common-source alcohol containers (such as kegs, punch bowls, wine boxes, or large dispensers) are not permitted, as they encourage high-risk drinking.
  • When individuals under 21 are present, no alcohol may be consumed in the room, even by those of legal drinking age.

These guidelines are designed to promote personal responsibility, safety, and respect for the community while complying with legal requirements.

5.0 Procedures

To ensure fairness and accountability:

  • Employees who violate the policy will be supported through Human Resources, where appropriate actions will be taken.
  • Students who do not comply with this policy will be guided through the Campus Director of Student Affairs for educational interventions or further steps, if necessary.

6.0 Responsibilities

Retains records in accordance with the college’s retention policy.

Baker College System President/CEO

Reviews and approves the biennial policy assessment.
