Key Components of the Work Experience

Summary

A work experience is a professional learning experience that offers meaningful, practical work related to a student’s field of study or career interest. An internship gives a student the opportunity for career exploration and development, and to learn new skills. It offers the employer the opportunity to bring new ideas and energy into the workplace, develop talent and potentially build a pipeline for future full-time employees.

Once you have secured a location to satisfy the on-site component of your Work Experience course, be sure you complete the following tasks:

How to Ensure a Successful Work Experience

Make sure you register for the correct course during the semester you plan to complete your on-site hours. You can find this information under your program's informational page.

Declare your work site information as your Week One assignment in your Canvas course shell, including your site, supervisor, location, and contact information. You also must include a brief description of your roles and responsibilities. If you need to make an adjustment regarding your supervisor and/or provide updated contact information, please email crc@baker.edu.

Be sure your site supervisor signs and returns the Letter of Understanding with the college. Once site information is submitted, your listed supervisor will receive a Letter of Understanding from the college via email, outlining their responsibilities in hosting a Baker College student. This must be signed and returned to the College electronically.

Remember that a Baker College representative will contact your site supervisor to arrange a site visit. Site visits are conducted to ensure the legitimacy and quality of the work site.

Complete your Work Experience academic assignments and discussion boards. In addition to the on-site hours being completed at your work site, work experience courses have academic coursework components, including assignments and discussion board participation. Both the on-site and academic portions of the course must be completed in order to earn credit.

Be sure your site supervisor completes the electronic evaluation regarding your on-site work performance; this will be factored into your final grade for the course. The evaluation must be completed and returned. Evaluations will be sent no earlier than Week 8 of the semester.
